“Most of these deserted malls were occupied by small businesses and artisan shops, generally catering to local inhabitants…That fragility is beautifully expressed in Brandt’s production strategy for these images. Using glass held together with metal wires that references navigation stick charts, the images are heat-fused onto the glass. During the heating process, the glass bloats in shapes sculpted by the wires, thus creating a bubbling image that optically distorts the depicted space. Straight lines become curved, making our eyes losing their grip on a space that is becoming more and more unstable.”
